Full Suspension Mountain Bikes
This page will help you understand the often confusing world that is Full Suspension Mountain Bikes, (Softail, MTB’s). What defines these bikes is that they have both front and rear suspension. Simply put, the more travel one has, (Front and Rear) the more you can throw the bike down the Welsh mountains, (there are other mountain locations available) and take hits that would knock most people off their bike!
It’s often thought that riding down mountains is all one is supposed to do on full-suspension bike, but depending on the geometry and travel available on the suspension the bikes can be suitable for almost any kind of off-road riding, but unlike a Hardtail which can still be ridden on the road (a little), a Full suspension is just not designed for it.
Types of Full Suspension Mountain Bikes
This type of mountain bikes come in different categories such as Enduro, and Trail Full Suspension. Enduro are bikes designed for big ripping descents and mountain passes. They take a massive proportion of the vibration and impact stresses out of riding over very tough ground, usually downhill. There are also Trail Full Suspension Bikes, which are for the rider not looking to clatter down fire trails and mountain descents, but are still as serious off-road bike for trail riding; longer off-road all-day family (or not), runs thrashing through the off-road countryside.
There’s also different suspension fork travel available. The more fork travel there is on the suspension, the smoother the ride. However, fork travel increases usually along with price, so it really does depend on how much you want to spend.
These aren’t the only differences you can have within Full Suspension Mountain bikes. These bikes can also come in the 3 main wheel sizes; 26″, 27,”, and 29″, and each size has various advantages;
26″ wheels are not the most efficient you can get, these wheels are better for younger and smaller riders who are looking to transition from a smaller child’s bike to an adult one.
The slightly larger 27″ wheels are more efficient than the smaller size and stronger than larger wheels. These are usually ridden by the big hit crews that ride on single-track, rough trails that are really tough riding for the bikes.
The largest of the main three wheel sizes is 29″, and provides maximum efficiency and smoothness over rough ground out of the three sizes. Interestingly enough, this size of wheels came out after the 27″ size. The 29″ traverses over rough ground very efficiently, often not the chosen wheel by the technical crew due to its lack of side on strength, it’s still great for long-distance riding.
Three of the manufacturers we deal with
Click on the manufacturer’s logo below, this will take you to more information on these brands as well as some of the products in this category.
The brand that gave birth to Mountain biking back in the late 70’s in San Francisco USA, still pushing the boundaries and still the No1 choice of many riders, once a Marin owner always a Marin owner. Very light, strong and well equipped for the money; we’ve dealt with Marin for 39 years!
Produced in Holland, they are the biggest bike manufacturer out there by far; they know more than any other country about bikes, (and rain)! They have an extensive range of bikes and are the best value off the peg bike out there. You’ve only got to watch any Mountain bike race anywhere in the world and Giant will be competing and often winning.
