The different types of mountain bikes mainly come down to the suspension used. A Hard-Tail mountain bike refers to a bike which has suspension forks only at the front, and not at the rear. Alternatively, Full Suspension (Soft-Tail) mountain bikes are full suspension bikes. Both types of bikes can have different frame geometries, wheel sizes and differing suspension travel all for different riding styles and terrain.
