How to Prepare For the Cooler Temperatures
Whilst riding during the summer months, you know you are going to get really warm. But you can be prepared for that!
With autumn well and truly upon us, depending on the time of day you ride, the temperatures will drastically vary, as will the levels of rain! So how do you prepare for this?
Cooler weather will mean your body needs to adjust more to the changing temperatures. When you leave home it may be quite chilly, but as the day goes on and your body warms up, you will be stripping off layer after layer!
So why not do a warm up loop, that then passes back around by your house again – ensuring you have the opportunity to shed any unnecessary layers. If not, wear a number of thin layers that will be easy to store in a rucksack or bike panniers. Just ensure your extremities are kept warm; toes, knees, hands, ears; they need to be kept warm for the start of your ride, with protection that can be removed where needed.
A light wind vest is always a good idea as well. Keep it zipped up when you set out, as it protects your chest from cold and wind, then it can be removed once you have warmed up.
Make sure you have a lightweight raincoat, which will ensure you are always protected again unexpected weather. Wind as well as rain will be kept at bay with one of these. Plus it can easily be packed away when not needed.
With the dark nights creeping up on us, make sure you are adequately lit, so motorists can see you well! Check where you have luminous patches on your bike as well as you – make sure you are well seen on these autumnal mornings and evenings.
You may find it easier to go faster now. Warm weather can sap your energy, so now the slightly cooler temps have kicked in, you will probably find you can go faster and for longer, with perhaps a lower heart rate, giving you more power in your body. Colder weather may also make you feel hungrier. But don’t overeat before or during a bike ride!
When the weather cools slightly, you may think you don’t need the water. However it is still just as important to stay hydrated. Don’t forget you can also take a warmer drink when the weather is cooler, but keep drinking!
Keep your immune system healthy with plenty of liquids and nutrient rich fruit, veg. Stave off those coughs and colds to ensure you don’t miss a chance to go out!
And make sure your bike is in tip top condition, ready for the wet and perhaps slippery roads. With autumn comes lots of road hazards, so check your tyres, brakes, gears, as well as your bike lights.
