The Importance of Regular Bike Maintenance
Cycling can be a fantastic way to stay active, save money on transportation and reduce your carbon footprint. However, owning a bike comes with the responsibility of maintaining it. In order to keep your bike running smoothly, and more importantly safely, you need to ensure it has undergone the correct maintenance. In this blog, we discuss the importance of regular bike maintenance as well as some tips to keep your bike in top shape.
Check tyre pressure
Tyre pressures may be something that you overlook. However, having proper tyre pressure is critical for a smooth and efficient ride. You should check your tyre pressure as a part of your regular bike maintenance or whenever you go out for a lengthy cycle. The recommended range for your specific tyres is often printed on the sidewall of the tyre. The same with cars, it prolongs the life of them if they are kept at the correct pressure.
Clean your bike regularly
Believe it or not, the build-up of dirt, grime and debris can cause serious damage to your bike over time. Regular cleaning can help prevent corrosion and rust from developing. This not only keeps your bike looking great, but it keeps it in its best possible condition. Don’t neglect the chain or gears, these are the mechanical parts of a bike and need just as much attention, if not more, than everywhere else. You can always pop into our shop and we can advise you of the best cleaning tools and products!
Lubricate your chain
A well-lubricated chain is a happy chain. A lubricated chain helps keep your bike running smoothly and prevents rust and corrosion. Use a good-quality bike-specific lubricant and apply it to the chain, making sure to get between the links. This is a surefire way to ensure your chain functions efficiently and reduces the chances of it being damaged when used.
Adjust your brakes
If your brakes are causing you issues, you’re putting yourself and others in danger by riding. You should regularly check your brakes to ensure your safety when riding. Adjusting your brakes may be a task you need to carry out. While it may sound simple enough to do yourself, it’s incredibly important that brakes are adjusted correctly. Feel free to pop in to see us about this.
Inspect your bike before each ride
Inspecting your bike before each ride only takes a few minutes. This gives you the peace of mind you need, to be sure that everything is in working order. Quickly checking the brakes, tyres and gears brings any issues to your attention and will help keep you safe. If you notice any issues you should be able to make any necessary adjustments with a set of basic and handy tools. Then you can be on your way.
