Tips For A Family Cycling Trip
A cycling trip through the countryside is one of the best bonding experiences you can share with your family. And aren’t we lucky to live where we do!
Cycling is a great way to spend time with loved ones, explore the outdoors and stay fit! However, a successful family cycling trip requires a substantial amount of thought and preparation for it to be enjoyable for all. In this article, we are going to discuss some tips for a family cycling trip, to make your next outing one to remember.
Location, location, location…
Choosing a location and route that is suitable for all members of your family. If you have younger riders then assume that they will need more frequent breaks and will not be able to tackle some routes as well as some older ones. Planning the route ensures you stick to bike paths and quieter roads.
Carry out safety checks
Pulling a bike out of the garage after a season of no riding can cause elements of the bike to deteriorate. Ensure that each bike’s brakes, gears, tyres and chains are all in working condition before you head off. Also, check that each rider’s helmet is well-fitted as safety should be a key priority for you, especially as the kids grow.
Stick together
There’s nothing worse than being the one trailing behind on a group cycling trip. Be considerate and ride at the pace that suits your slowest riders. Start off slow and take the opportunity to warm up. Don’t push yourself or your family members too hard, too fast. If necessary, stop and wait for each other at designated points along the way. Perhaps you may want to think about a bike seat, tagalong or a bike trailer to help with those younger members of family. That will also mean everyone can join in the fun, including the tiny ones!
Pack intelligently
Packing essentials like water, snacks and a first aid kit is a must. Consider bringing gear for all types of weather, rain or shine. Particularly in England, you never know when the weather is going to turn. Evenly distribute the weight to ensure that it’s not all on a single rider but take into account that some riders will be able to carry more than others.
Have fun!
The main goal of any family outing is to have fun! Enjoy spending time together as the day will come when family cycling trips aren’t like they used to be! Don’t worry too much about breaking any PBs, just enjoy the journey. However, do take the tips for a family cycle trip we mentioned on this blog on board as they could save you from having to deal with some unhappy riders.
When they get older..
Once your kids have grown, they may still want to come out with you. Some may still like the gentle and easy country lane cycle rides. But the teenagers may want something a little more fun, like off roading and track riding! This could be when you struggle to keep up with them!!
